Counseling Courses PC.501 INTRODUCTION TO PASTORAL COUNSELING. An introduction to the principles, techniques and theories of counseling with emphasis on counselor characteristics, helping skills, the various types of Pastoral counseling, the most common counseling problems, and the uniqueness of Christian counseling. (4 hours) PC.502 ISSUES OF COUNSELING. The application of psychology and counseling to the work of the church, with special emphasis on crisis intervention, death, grief, divorce, addictions, and homosexuality, a hospital chapalincy is optional. (3 hours) PC.503 GROUP COUNSELING. Techniques of group counseling
and principles of good interpersonal relationships will be discussed in the context of
small group discussions. Prerequisite PC.501 PC.504 HOSPITAL PRACTICUM. Supervised practical counseling experience in a general and psychiatric hospital setting, designed especially for Master of Divinity students. Prerequisite PC.501, 502 or permission from instructor. (3 hours) PC.51l PSYCHOLOGICAL AND SOCIOLOGICAL FOUNDATIONS AND LEARNING. Study of the changes in human behavior by which skills, knowledge and attitudes are learned and a survey of the schools of learning theory; Contemporary sociological problems in church developmental proceses in the light of the development of individuals in relation to their socioeconomic background. (3 hours) PC.61 1 PSYCHOLOGY AND THEOLOGY. A survey of theories and
approaches to the integration of psychology and theology. This course will evaluate the
theories of religious behavior. PC.612 PSYCHOLOGY OF RELIGION. A discussion of religious experience including conversion, glossolalia, faith healing, prayer and demonology. Each viewed from a Biblical and psychological perspective.(3 hours) PC.613 COUNSELING THEORIES. Classical and current
theories of counseling will be studied and evaluated in the light of Scripture,
psychological sophistication, and practical relevance. Both secular and practical
counseling approaches will be discussed. PC.614 PASTORAL PSYCHOLOGY. An overview of psychology as it applies to the work of the church, including a consideration of the integration of psychology and theology, psychopathology, lay-helping, the development of church counseling centers, and the church's role in the prevention of personal and spiritual problems. Prerequisite PC.501. (3 hours) PC.621/622 MARRIAGE AND FAMILY COUNSELING. Consideration of the dynarnics of marriage and family relationships focusing on the counselor's role in premarital, marital, and family counseling through lectures, discussion, case studies, and demonstrations. (4 hours) PC.651 PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT. A consideration of human
development from conception to death, emphasizing research, personality, and counseling
implications at each stage. Pc.701/702/703 COLLOQUIUM IN COUNSELING AND PSYCHOLOGY. Integrative discussion considering special topics each quarter. Enrollment limited to students in the M.A. or Th.M. programs specializing in counseling.(3 hours) PC.711 CHRISTIAN THEORIES OF COUNSELING AND INTEGRATION. An in-depth analysis of the theories and methods of Christian therapists or authors who have written about Christian counseling or about the integration of psychology and Theology. Special emphasis will be on the applications of these theories to counseling practice. Enrollment limited to students in the M.A. or Th.M. programs specializing in counseling. (3 hours) PC.712 ADVANCED COUNSELING. Advanced counseling techniques including participation in active counseling as a participant-observer. Prerequisite. PC.501 ( 3 hours) PC.732 CRISIS COUNSELING. A consideration of the theory
and practice of crisis intervention, with emphasis in the Christian implications of crisis
counseling, the training of crisis counselors, and the dynamics of specific crisis
situations. This course is limited to students in the M.A.or Th.M. programs specializing
in counseling. PC.733 COMMUNITY COUNSELING. An overview and Christian perspective on the growing field of community psychology, including considerations of environmental psychology, prevention, cross-cultural counseling, community intervention, social support systems, and the development of community counseling centers within and outside the church. Limited to student with M.A. or Th.M programs. (3 hours) PC.734 SHORT TERM COUNSELING. The purpose of this course is to introduce the student to principles of problem formation and resolution in the counseling relationship. Emphasis is placed on practice as well as theory. Limited to the student within the M.A. or Th.M programs. (3 hours) PC.905 PSYCHOLOGICAL RESEARCH METHODS. Critical review of
basic research techniques and examination of the methods and conclusions of some
representative research. Prerequisite: Undergraduate course in experimental psychology or
statistics. |
